Big love

Blogger hype is hard to resist. I’ve read glowing reviews of Lush’s Big shampoo from lovely ladies on both sides of the globe and despite my relative indifference to the brand I thought I’d give this one a try. Usually I use an anti-dandruff shampoo every other wash as I find it thoroughly cleans off all the build up of the hair oils and dry shampoo I put in there every day. From what I read about Big it would do the same and leave me with shiny silky hair.

It’s an odd product and it stinks. It’s a gluey mixture of sea salt, seaweed, salt water, citrus and coconut oil, with the sea salt scattered throughout in big chunks that don’t melt away. You scoop a bit out, then try and rub it all through your hair like a normal shampoo and all the bits of salt go everywhere. We’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto. The first time I used it I did two applications but since I’ve found that just one is more than enough.

Big makes your hair squeaky clean and I mean squeaky. Initially I tried just using the shampoo and no conditioner, with just a touch of hair oil afterwards so I could get the tangles out. Now I tend to use it and follow with a deep conditioning mask on the ends and that combination is perfect for me. One thing I noticed is that it makes your hair dry super fast and it feels really light and utterly clean. Big gave my hair a lot of body even after I’d run the GHD through it. In terms of shine and softness it also does a solid job.

I’m a huge fan. HUGE. It takes some getting used to the smell and consistency but the results are absolutely worth it and my hair really has never felt so clean. At around $27 per 300g tub it isn’t cheap but there’s certainly no regrets from me in spending the money. Totally recommended.

Look weird, goes well.

It’s just occurred to me that this is possibly along the same lines as the Redken Nature’s Rescue Sea Polish product – something I thought was such a gimmick when it came out, but being the hair product junkie that I am, I had to try it, and I’m now actually obsessed with it, as are numerous of my friends who I’ve gotten on to it! It’s the best clarifying product I’ve found – something I thought would surely leave my hair squeaky and feeling dry (my hair is naturally very dry and coarse) – but it actually leaves it feeling so incredibly soft and smooth – and nothing removes build up and refreshes my (blonde) colour like this one! Have you tried it?

From how you’ve described it then it could be – haven’t heard of the Redken though. I think if you liked that then the Lush would probably suit you too Lucy. It really is great stuff.
